During the 17th season, we added another element to our educational mission: a Chorale Apprentice program, in which a high-school music student is invited to join the Chorale for a year and experience the full season's activities. The Director and Chorale members serve as mentors. The program has become an excellent vehicle for students to see how those who enjoy choral music can carry that enjoyment throughout their lives, regardless of their career directions. Meet our apprentices below!
25rd Season (2002-2003):
Rachel Erickson, soprano and student apprentice, is a Sophomore at Los Alamos High School, where she is a member of Encore, the elite mixed choir. Last year she sang in Harmony, the top women’s choir. She has been singing in church choir under the Chorale’s Assistant Conductor, Suzanne Johnson, since Kindergarten. Rachel and her sister Becky sang Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Pie Jesu” for their sister Beth’s wedding in 2000. James Onstad, baritone, is a sophomore at Santa Fe Secondary School. He has performed with the All-Counties Children's Chorus, the Desert Chorale's Children's Choir, with the Santa Fe Opera in the American premiere of A Dream Play, and also in Carmen and Wozzeck. James has performed with "Theaterwork" in When Hummingbirds Catch Fire, Hansel and Gretel, The Unicorn, Phaedra, Three-Penny Opera, and Amahl and the Night Visitors as Amahl and Luisa Ferranda. This past winter, he apprenticed the conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra. James sang in the New Mexico All-State Chorus in 2002 and took first place in the NATS young men's division voice competition in 2001 and 2002. He has studied voice and piano at Interlochen Arts Camp in 2000. James currently sings with the St. Bede's church choir and continues his studies of voice with Marilyn Barnes and piano with Lydia Madrick. James enjoys spending his free time sailing and skiing.

Javier Ortiz, Pojoaque High School. Sang bass in the Chorale as one of our 24th season student apprentices. Javier attended Pojoaque High School where he was the bass section leader in the choir. He was the 2001 bass apprentice for New Mexico Pro Coro and also sang with their youth choir. He was a member of the 2001 All-State mixed choir, and has appeared in Santa Fe's professional theater company "Theaterwork", where he has appeared in "Guadalupe!" "The Threepenny Opera," "La Dolorosa," and "Of Mice and Men." Javier will be attending UNM in the Fall.
23rd Season (2000-2001):

Katherine Kilgore, soprano, is a Junior at Santa Fe High School and is actively involved in musical pursuits. She plays the flute in the school band and is taking voice lessons from Jeanne Grealish. Katherine has sung in the All-State Chorus and currently has a part in the SFHS production of "The Beggars' Opera." She also spent this past summer at Northwestern University participating is a vocal performance workshop. Katherine currently plans to pursue studies in vocal performance when she goes to college.

Diana Sheppard, alto, is a senior at Los Alamos High School. A native of Los Alamos, she has sung in choirs since the 8th grade. In high school, Diana has sung in All-State, school musicals, and church choirs. Diana works at a day-care center and loves children. She currently plans to go to college and major in elementary education.
22nd Season (1999-2000):
Diana Berkowitz, soprano, has lived in Santa Fe for the majority of her life. A senior at Santa Fe High School, she has sung in the school choir with Director Cora Harms for three years. Diana has also been a part of three productions with the Santa Fe Opera. She is currently taking lessons from Marilyn Niska and is interested in pursuing a career in music Aaron LeDuc, baritone, has been singing for seven of his seventeen years. A senior at Los Alamos High School, he sings with the advanced mixed chorus, "Encore." He is also a member of a "doo-wop" men's quartet, "Room 132." Aaron has played guitar for two years and loves it. He works at Los Alamos Music and assists the town with its various musical needs. Aaron plans to participate for a year in "Up With People" and then go to college to major in Vocal Performance or Music Education.
21st Season (1998-1999):
Sarah Wolf, alto, is a senior at Santa Fe High School and a Chorale apprentice for the 21st season. She has sung in the Santa Fe High A Cappella Choir and in the Temple Beth Shalom choir for several years. She was also a member of the 1998 All-State Choir. Sarah has studied piano for eight years and is very involved in her temple and school. She is very excited to be singing with the Chorale this year.
20th Season (1997-1998):
Ingela Onstad, soprano, was a senior at Santa Fe High School and was one of the Chorale's 1997-98 apprentices. She sang in the Santa Fe High A Capella Choir and in the Santa Fe High Women's Ensemble. Ingela had been studying voice privately for five years, as well as playing the oboe in the Santa Fe Youth Symphony for two years. She performed in the Santa Fe Opera's Noah's Flood, Santa Fe High's production of "Jesus Christ Superstar," and took part in the 1997 New Mexico All-State Music Festival. In her spare time Ingela enjoys reading, Thai kickboxing, and acting in plays. She is pursuing a degree and career in vocal performance at McGill University. Clint Singley, tenor, was a junior at Santa Fe High School in his apprentice season. He sang in the A Capella Choir at school, and the Youth Choir and Contemporary Choir at St. John's United Methodist Church. Clint has sung in choirs for as long as he can remember and enjoys singing in the church services at St. John's. He made the All-State Choir his sophomore year and was also in the Fiesta Ringers handbell choir. Clint has been playing the piano since the age of six and was working on composition and learning to play the guitar. He was active in the youth group and the Youth Ministry Council at St. John's and was a swimmer on the Santa Fe High School Swim Team. Though unsure of what his area of study in college will be, music will surely be part of his curriculum. William Westen, tenor, was an enthusiastic apprentice singer in the Chorale during the 20th anniversary season. He loves to sing &emdash; some may even say he was born singing. Will is a Senior at Santa Fe High School and a member of the youth and contemporary choirs at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Santa Fe and of the A Cappella Choir at Santa Fe High. He was a trumpeter in the band for six years and still likes to fool around with the trumpet once in a while. Will is also a big part of the Fiesta Bell Choir that toured San Francisco this past summer. He plans to attend Whittier College in California and aspires to become a Broadway singer in New York.
19th Season (1996-1997): 
Kristin Derr, soprano, was a junior at Los Alamos High School during her apprentice season. She sings in Encore Choir at school and also played the alto saxophone in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands. Kristin has been in choirs all her life, including church, community musicals, and the Santa Fe Opera's production of Noah's Flood. She participated in the Solo & Ensemble contest for the previous four years and planned to double major in Music and Elementary Education at Baylor University. Kristin enjoys community service and was vice-chair of a local youth community service organization sponsored by Los Alamos County. She was also involved in America's Pride, a nationally sponsored organization that teaches the drug-free message. Kristin's desire is to raise a family, become a Kindergarten teacher, and keep music in the elementary schools. Emily Wyrick, alto, was a senior at Los Alamos High School during her apprentice season. She has been involved in musical study and performance since the age of five, with voice and dance lessons and performances in Amahl and the Night Visitors, How to Eat Like a Child, Finnian's Rainbow, and Oliver. She was also invited to perform in the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Los Alamos Little Theater. Emily sang in the Encore Choir and played bass guitar in the Jazz-I Band all four of her high-school years. She performed Beethoven's Eroica Symphony with the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra, has accompanied the Sangre de Cristo Chorale in Christmas and Spring concert performances, and has had solo performances on numerous occasions (including performance of the National Anthem at the State Championship Track and Swimming meets). Emily was also a cross-country athlete, having been a member of the LAHS cross-country team. Texas Tech University is now Emily's alma mater, where in addition to her studies she is pursuing Music as a minor.
18th Season (1995-1996): 
John Roberts was a senior at Los Alamos High School and sang in the Chorale bass section. He was involved in choral music since the sixth grade, when he joined the Los Alamos Boys' Choir. By his eighth-grade year, he was in Unity, the Los Alamos Middle School Choir and Boys' Choir. In high school, John continued in music; he was selected for All State for all four years. He has participated in Solo & Ensemble, performed with many high-school, church, and community choirs, and has started both a barber shop quartet and a women's choir. John's other interests were cross country and Junior Civitan, but his favorite hobby continued to be music.
17th Season (1994-1995): 
Tamara Lynn Ready, alto, was a junior at Española Valley High School. She played the saxophone for the school band and was the drum major for the marching band. She played violin and sang in two mariachi groups, "Mariachi Juvenil de Española" and "Mariachi Española." Tamara participated in the New Mexico All-State Music Festival, All District Honor Band, and the District Solo and Ensemble Festival for the previous two years. She was also a member of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony. She also played violin for Celebrate Youth! for the previous seven years, either as a soloist or as a member of the Celebrate Youth! String Ensemble and was a violin soloist in various church services in Española. Tamara planned to pursue her studies in music and hopes eventually to teach music at the secondary level.
